Land grants were authorized to individuals and to groups who petitioned the colonial government for large tracts to found settler towns and cities in the Dawnland (later rebranded as New England). In this bounty rewards archive we present evidence about land and cash bounties granted to people who participated in and/or profited from scalping, killing, and/or capturing Indigenous peoples. Use the search box below to search for town names, names of killers, captors, claimants, heirs, militia and soldiers, or by the year of the attack.

Due to limitations of archival records from this time period, we cannot say with certainty in all cases which individuals scalped and which individuals only supported or profited from the violence. Wherever possible, specific information, citations and sources are included in the Award Note and Source fields.

Cargill sought a bounty for killing and scalping "friendly Indians," including Margaret Moxa, a Penobscot knowledge-keeper and cultural mediator with the English, as well as her husband, child and nine others who departed from a peace conference at Fort St. Georges, in what is known as the Owl's Head Massacre. Cargill was acquitted, however, in August 1757 by the York County Superior Court of Judicature and presented the scalps he had kept to the Executive Council Committee, which recorded: "Capt. James Cargill this day delivered us Twelve Indian Scalps, including two small Ones, which were put into a tar barrel, and in our presence consumed." He was not awarded this bounty, but went free to kill and scalp other Penobscot and Wabanaki people, receiving many bounty payments.
